Specimen Bonsai Trees
A specimen is normally a finished tree over 20 years old, it
has a well defined trunk and canopy, and it has achieved a "unique" status. Its
development has attained a point where it is distinctly different from all other
trees, even ones of the same species. These trees, when available, can range
from $500 to $15,000, depending on the condition and age and tree species of
each specimen. These are what most people will consider to be prized bonsai trees.
Masterpieces come from a culmination of bonsai skills, foresight, patience, and luck. These trees can be as young as 50, but in most cases, are well over 100 and therefore have seen more than one owner. A masterpiece can sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars, or even attain "priceless" status, as collectors acquire them and refuse to sell at any price. They are worth looking at and looking forward to, though maybe one in thousands ever stands a chance of achieving the status of being classified as a Masterpiece.
